Multilingual
Ministries (of the Quebec District of the PAOC)
Dedicated to the
printed message of Christ…
The rich
history of Language Literature Ministries (LLM) within the PAOC dates back to
1969. Despite numerous changes, one goal has remained : to communicate the
message of Christ via the printed page, in as many languages as possible. Over
the years, MM has gradually limited its focus on the French language, the needs
being so overwhelming. LLM
evolved quietly over the years : first started to edit and distribute a French
correspondence course about the Bible, it later became the North American
distributor of Vida books, continuing a slow but steady growth as a ministry.
The 1990’s saw the realization of LLM’s first important undertaking, the
publication of “Vie Nouvelle”, a Sunday School program translated and
adapted from the Radiant Life program in the USA, a tool for which the French
churches had been praying for some 40 years!! LLM
crossed a dramatical milestone in 1995 when Joel Gerbore was appointed Director.
Under his leadership, the organization literally exploded. In just seven years,
the ministry has consolidated its activities around four areas : publishing and
editing services to Christian ministries (including the PAOC’s International
office and the Quebec district of the PAOC), exclusive distribution to Canadian
Christian bookstores of more than 50 French-language publishers, retailing with
two bookstores, and publishing — with now over 50 titles in print. LLM now
reaches the international markets of Europe, Africa, the West Indies, and the
continental US. Revenues have soared from around 150 000$ before 1995 to more
than 1,5 million dollars for the 2001 fiscal year. Initially staffed by three
employees, LLM now employs fourteen full-time staff members and more than a
dozen independent contractors who work periodically on the translation,
proof-reading and graphic layout of the books it publishes. The
publishing activities of LLM have been commended all over the world, and last
year LLM received in Europe, the First Prize for the best French Evangelical
book (the French equivalent of the Gold Medallion Award), for the book “La
jeunesse : ses problèmes, leurs solutions”, the French edition of Josh
McDowell’s classic reference work, “Handbook on Counselling Youth”. This
publication was made possible by a generous contribution from the Manitoba and
NWT District of the PAOC. Enchanted with MM’s projects, Rev. Michael Love,
Church Ministries Director, was immediately willing to contribute from his
budget — with amazing results. LLM’s
Director, Joel Gerbore, believes partnership like these is a key solution to
produce quality French materials that would otherwise be impossible to publish,
given the very small size of the French market. LLM’s vision for the next few
years is to find partners in order to produce a complete library of reference
materials for leaders and pastors in the French-language. LLM believes that
equipping Christians — but particularly, pastors and leaders —with
books and materials that will contribute to their growth is the key in seeing a
powerful move of God among French people, in Canada and all over the world. Here is
a few of the projects for which LLM is considering the help of financial
partners:
